We are very pleased to announce the exhibition May Not the Soul Be as Balloons, which takes place in our Vienna space as part of the "Curated by" gallery festival and is curated by a text generator. The 14 participating artists are engaging in the experiment of creating their works in a dialogue with algorithms and artificial intelligence.

The exhibition May Not the Soul Be as Balloons directly references Estelle Hoy's lead essay, which outlines and defines the content of this year's Curated by theme: Comedy. Hoy's text is captured verbatim and transformed into a curatorial concept on a semantic basis.

This is made possible with the help of the AI-based text generator Poetry Machine, which was invented, developed, and programmed by the artist and media theorist David Link.

Poetry Machine is capable of writing its own reflections, descriptions and texts. It is fed with four or five words and associatively picks out other suitable word and sentence components from the Internet, which it then assembles into complete texts.

This ability has now been used to curate the exhibition May Not the Soul Be as Balloons. 14 short sections from Estelle Hoy's main essay, mostly consisting of just a few words or sentences, were entered into the Poetry Machine. With the help of its algorithm, it autonomously generated 14 detailed descriptions of works.

On the basis of these work descriptions, 14 artists then created the paintings, sculptures and installations in the exhibition. Some transposed the Poetry Machine's texts almost verbatim, some were inspired by them and chose an associative approach, some understood the contents in a classical curatorial sense and selected suitable works from their earlier output. But all of them entered into immediate resonance and direct dialogue with the poetic-machine thoughts of the Poetry Machine, which in this way became the curator of the exhibition in the best sense of the word.

In the gallery space, the works are arranged in the order in which Poetry Machine wrote the descriptions of the works. Via a sound installation, the visitor hears the texts read by the actress Mavie Hörbiger.

The artists whose works can be seen in the exhibition come from the most diverse fields of art: Ramesch Daha, Carola Dertnig, Verena Issel, Raphael Hefti, and Franziska Reinbothe are united by the conceptual and contextual approach to their work. Maja Vukoje, Tomas Kleiner, Rosemarie Trockel, and Anna Khodorkovskaya seek in their art the performative or visual realization of hybrid social conditions. Heidi Specker and Ricardo Valentim repeatedly deal with the medium of photography, while Eckart Hahn, Leszek Skurski, and Justine Otto have devoted themselves to figurative painting.

Poetry Machine was created by David Link in 2001 and has been further developed since then. It is best described as a text-generating computer system based on semantic networks that autonomously feeds itself from the Internet and generates huge, associative, never-ending streams of communication. Since its creation, Poetry Machine has already appeared in the context of numerous exhibitions, including at MAK Vienna, ZKM Karlsruhe, and Documenta 13 in Kassel. With May Not the Soul Be as Balloons Poetry Machine is now curating its own exhibition for the first time.

Wir freuen uns sehr, die Ausstellung "May Not the Soul Be as Balloons" ankündigen zu dürfen, die im Rahmen des Galerienfestivals "Curated by" in unseren Wiener Räumen stattfindet und von einem Textgenerator kuratiert wird. Die 14 teilnehmenden Künstlerinnen und Künstler lassen sich dabei auf das Experiment ein, ihre Werke im Dialog mit Algorithmen und Künstlicher Intelligenz zu schaffen.

Die Ausstellung "May Not the Soul Be as Balloons" nimmt unmittelbaren Bezug zu dem Leit-Essay von Estelle Hoy, der das diesjährige Curated-by-Thema "Comedy" inhaltlich umreißt und definiert. Hoys Text wird wortgetreu erfasst und auf semantischer Grundlage in ein kuratorisches Konzept umgewandelt.

Ermöglicht wird dies mit Hilfe des KI basierten Textgenerators und Computer Systems "Poetry Machine", das von dem Künstler und Medientheoretiker David Link erfunden, entwickelt und programmiert wurde.

Poetry Machine ist in der Lage, eigene Überlegungen anzustellen und Texte zu verfassen. Sie wird mit vier, fünf Worten gefüttert und sucht sich aus dem Internet assoziativ weitere, passende Wort- und Satzbestandteile heraus, die sie immer weiterspinnt und zu kompletten Texten zusammensetzt.

Diese Fähigkeit wurde nun genutzt, um die Ausstellung "May Not the Soul Be as Balloons" zu kuratieren. 14 kurze Abschnitte aus dem Leit-Essay von Estelle Hoy, meist nur aus einigen wenigen Worten oder Sätzen bestehend, wurden in die Poetry Machine eingegeben. Mithilfe ihres Algorithmus generierte sie daraus völlig autonom 14 ausführliche Werkbeschreibungen.

Auf Basis dieser Werkbeschreibungen schufen anschließend 14 Künstlerinnen und Künstler die Werke der Ausstellung. Manche setzten die Texte der Poetry Machine fast wortgetreu um, manche ließen sich davon inspirieren und wählten einen assoziativen Ansatz, manche begriffen die Inhalte im klassisch-kuratorischen Sinn und suchten aus ihrem früheren Schaffen passende Arbeiten heraus. Alle traten aber in unmittelbare Resonanz und direkten Dialog mit den poetisch-maschinellen Gedanken der Poetry Machine, die auf diese Weise im besten Sinne des Wortes zur Kuratorin der Ausstellung wurde.

Im Galerieraum werden die Arbeiten in der Reihenfolge angeordnet, in der die Poetry Machine die Werkbeschreibungen verfasst hat. Über eine Sound-Installation hört der Besucher die Texte, die von der Schauspielerin Mavie Hörbiger gelesen werden.

Die Künstlerinnen und Künstler, deren Arbeiten in der Ausstellung "May Not the Soul Be as Balloons" zu sehen sind, kommen aus den unterschiedlichsten Bereichen der Kunst: Ramesch Daha, Carola Dertnig, Verena Issel, Raphael Hefti und Franziska Reinbothe verbindet der konzeptionelle und kontextuelle Ansatz ihrer Arbeiten. Maja Vukoje, Tomas Kleiner, Rosemarie Trockel und Anna Khodorkovskaya suchen in ihrer Kunst nach der performativen oder visuellen Umsetzung hybrider, gesellschaftlicher Gegebenheiten. Heidi Specker und Ricardo Valentim befassen sich immer wieder mit dem Medium der Fotografie. Eckart Hahn, Leszek Skurski und Justine Otto haben sich der figurativen Malerei verschrieben.

Poetry Machine wurde 2001 von David Link geschaffen und seither mehrfach weiterentwickelt. Sie versteht sich als ein auf semantischen Netzwerken basierendes, textgenerierendes Computer-System, das sich autonom aus dem Internet speist und riesige, assoziative, nicht endende Kommunikationsströme erzeugt. Seit ihrem Entstehen trat Poetry Machine bereits im Rahmen zahlreicher Ausstellungen in Erscheinung, unter anderem im MAK in Wien, im ZKM in Karlsruhe und auf der documenta 13 in Kassel. Mit "May Not the Soul Be as Balloons" kuratiert sie nun erstmals eine eigene Ausstellung.
